HVO is referred to as „Renewable Diesel“ in the USA. It is not biodiesel. The term „HVO“ is relatively unknown in North America.
In North America, product names like „R95 B5“ are common => 95% Renewable Diesel (HVO) with 5% Biodiesel.
Renewable Diesel (HVO) complies with the North American standard ASTM D975, which is largely identical to the European DIN EN 15940.
In the US, HVO is typically blended in at a concentration of between 51% and 99%. For tax and regulatory reasons, HVO100 is not common.
In California, by 2025 more than 70% of the diesel sold at petrol stations was already covered by HVO.
Important! HVO blends sold in the US can contain up to 20% biodiesel, e.g., HVO80 + 20% biodiesel. Almost all US diesel engines can handle 20% biodiesel because they are certified to the ASTM D7467 standard. Diesel vehicles imported from Europe could have problems with B20 and should be fueled with HVO95-HVO99 in the US.
HVO in the USA and Europe is almost identical in terms of its technical properties.
The local emission reduction (soot, HC, etc.) depends on the HVO share Exact values can be found under the information for HVO/XTL.
HVO ramp-up in California. Goal: complete defossilization by 2030. HVO = green / biodiesel = yellow / fossil diesel = black
